Gents-

Along the vein of autopilots- this is information that might interest some
of you.

As you know- we've been conducting a very thorough rehab on N414C a 685
commander.

When we were making the decision to conduct this rehab, we engaged a few
autopilot manufacturers about modifying their STCs to include the 685
because it is unfortunately common that they leave the 685 off their
paperwork when filing the data for their STCs.

S-TEC was our first choice- and they were extraordinarily unhelpful and
uninterested. (Weeks/Months to return phone calls, etc...)

We wound up talking to Chelton Aviation about their AP-3C since they were
aggressively filing STCs for a broad range of aircraft. Chelton was eager
to amend their STC and obtained a project number and provided all the
engineering data for the installation.

About a month before certification/data collection, two principles at
Chelton were killed in an accident, and as a result Chelton Aviation was
absorbed by it's sister company Wulfsberg. Wulfsberg is not as openly
interested in this STC as Chelton was- but they are supporting us through
the STC process with a DAS. (DAS not selected yet... But we are close.)

Apparently before the accident, Chelton was eagerly looking to expand their
STC to cover the whole range of commanders- which would have been a boon to
all of us.

If there is sufficient interest in the AP-3C by other commander owners-
please let me know- as it will help the DAS facilities to hear that they
have a chance to recoup some costs on this STC.

If anyone has any interest in learning more- let me know.

As always- it's a learning experience when you try to put new avionics in an
old (but good!) airplane!

Gents-

Oh- I violated prime directive #5541: "Don't talk in Jargon."

DAS = "Designated Alternation Station. They are designated alternates to
your local FISDO/MIDO and have been given authority by the FAA to approve
STCs.
It's also worth mentioning that we removed 180lbs (appx) of autopilot stuff
from the 685.... And the AP-3C replacing it weights 13.5lbs when fully
installed...

Net gain: 166lbs, or both our dogs and the baby that arrives in September,
or :30 more cruise fuel, or another 100nm in range...depending on how you
want to measure it. Wink

Bruce-

Nobody at Chelton, currently... Let me talk to the DAS rep that we are
currently working with and see if he'd like ot hear from you. (I'm hoping
that they see the value in issueing an STC covering the entire range of
commanders- thus giving all of us a new option for avionics...)

What type Commander do you have?

Mason, Thank you for responding.. I had talked with Auto-Pilot Central and they stated that only an old Lear or Early model Brittan was approved for the 680, however, that was about three years ago. I will give Century a call and see what I can find out. I have had some work performed on my 680 and should get it out of the shop on Wqensday and can't waite to fly. I only have about 15 hours but looking to put more real soon. Again thanks for the advice. Gil

520 is not listed on any of the Century auto pilot STC's. The only models listed are flat nacelle aircraft.
